Discover Tilos Island: Greece’s Hidden Gem

Discover Tilos Island: Greece’s Hidden Gem

If, like us, you prefer to escape the bustling tourist spots. I highly recommend that you visit the small, serene island of Tilos in Greece. This charming island in the Dodecanese offers an enchanting mix of unspoiled nature, historic sites, and warm hospitality.

Below is our guide to the must-see attractions and activities on Tilos.

Explore Megalo Chorio: A Journey Through Time

Megalo Chorio, the island's capital, is a picturesque, albeit tiny, village that seems frozen in time. It is only a short bus ride costing around €2 each from Livadia and is definitely worth a visit. Here, you can enjoy a nice refreshing drink at one of its few tavernas with a view over the island. Wander through its narrow, winding streets lined with whitewashed houses and vibrant bougainvillaea or visit its quaint stoney beach. If you are particularly interested in history, you may wish to visit the Archaeological Museum, which showcases artefacts from Tilos’ ancient past, including remnants from the Mycenaean period and the famous dwarf elephant bones discovered in Charkadio Cave.

Visit the Medieval Castle

Perched above Megalo Chorio sits the Medieval Castle of Tilos, built by the Knights of Saint John during the late Byzantine period. This castle offers spectacular views across Agios Antonios Bay. It is renowned for its stunning sunsets and breathtaking views of the island and the Aegean Sea.

Discover Micro Chorio: The Ghost Village

Just a short distance from Livadia lies the abandoned village of Micro Chorio. Once home to hundreds of residents, it was deserted in the mid-20th century. Today, you can wander through the ruins of stone houses and churches, with the eerie silence broken only by the wind. At night, the village comes alive with a unique little taverna set among the ruins, offering a magical atmosphere. I believe this opens at around 11 pm and stays open until the early hours. Unfortunately, we did not get to visit the taverna when it was open as this only happens in the summer season.

Visit the Monastery of Agios Panteleimon

This stunning monastery, located on the slopes of Mount Profitis Ilias, is the spiritual heart of Tilos. Built in the 15th century, it offers panoramic views of the island and is a place of peace and reflection. The monastery is dedicated to Saint Panteleimon, the patron saint of Tilos, and hosts a vibrant festival every July. You can get a bus to the Monastery in the summer season.

Hike Through Natural Beauty

If your passion is hiking, then you will love Tilos. Keen walkers come from far and wide to experience some of the Numerous hiking trails that crisscross the island. With the route from Livadia to Megalo Chorio being particularly popular. This trail takes you through verdant valleys, past ancient ruins, and offers stunning sea views.

The island is a designated nature reserve, home to many rare birds and plants. We heard what we believe to be,  bonelli eagles circling in the mountains each morning whilst sitting out having our breakfast. In fact, from our beautiful wraparound balcony, we saw and heard numerous animals. From the cockerel waking us in the morning to the abundance of goats that wandered in the valley below us. There was always something different to see.

For a more secluded experience, you can head to Eristos Beach, which I believe is a long stretch of beach consisting of shingle and sand. Pack a picnic and enjoy the tranquillity.
